Nguyen TM, Tonmukayakul U, Khanh-Dao Le L, et al. Modeled health economic and equity impact on dental caries and health outcomes from a 20% sugar sweetened beverages tax in Australia. Health Econ. 2023;32(11):2568-2582. doi:10.1002/hec.4739
This study assesses the impact of a 20% sugar sweetened beverages tax (SSB) on preventing dental caries in the Australian population. Using a Markov model, the research finds that implementing the tax results in significant cost savings, decreased decayed teeth, and reduced disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) over both a 10-year and lifetime period. Overall, the study suggests that a 20% SSB tax in Australia would be beneficial for both public health and economic outcomes, promoting health equity in the process.
Tan Minh’s paper was chosen from a competitive pool of 28 nominations for its novelty and exemplary use of health equity considerations in economic evaluations. Each paper underwent a blinded review by CEVR directors and faculty members, who evaluated the submissions for methodological quality, timeliness, and potential influence on policy or clinical decision-making. The top three papers with the highest faculty ratings were then reviewed by CEVR’s CEA Registry Scientific Advisory Board using the same criteria.
