5th Annual Tufts-CEVR’s Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

Paper of the Year Award Winner

Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health (CEVR) at Tufts Medical Center is pleased to announce the winner of our 5th annual Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) Paper of the Year Award.

The winner is…

Stacey Kowal, MSc, Carmen D. Ng, PhD, Robert Schuldt, PhD, Daniel Sheinson, PhD, Richard Cookson, PhD. The Impact of Funding Inpatient Treatments for COVID-19 on Health Equity in the United States: A Distributional Cost-Effectiveness Analysis. Value Health. 2023 Feb;26(2):216-225.

With a team of esteemed researchers from the United States and United Kingdom, the lead author, Stacey Kowal, MSc, a Principal Health Policy & Systems Researcher at Genentech and ISPOR’s Chair for the Health Equity Research Special Interest Group, conducted a novel distributional cost-effectiveness analysis to quantify the equity implications of funding COVID-19 treatments in the United States. Their findings suggest that “Medicare funding of COVID-19 treatments may improve overall health while reducing existing health inequalities, given the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 hospitalizations on vulnerable communities”.

Stacey Kowal’s paper was chosen from a competitive pool of 27 nominations for its novelty and exemplary use of health equity considerations in economic evaluations. Each paper underwent a blinded review by CEVR directors and faculty members, who evaluated the submissions for methodological quality, timeliness, and potential influence on policy or clinical decision-making. CEVR’s CEA Registry External Scientific Advisory Board of academic experts used the same criteria to blindly review the three papers with the highest faculty ratings and select the winner.

The two other finalists were:
