Health Policy Seminar
“Assessing Palliative care delivery and value in cancer”
Xin Hu, PhD, MSPH is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory School of Medicine. She is a current visiting scientist at the American Cancer Society. Prior to joining the Department, she worked as a Research Associate at the Yale Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy and Effectiveness Research Center and a Biostatistician at the Yale Center for Analytical Sciences.
Dr. Hu’s research focuses on cancer outcomes, health care quality and health disparities, and she specializes in leveraging causal inference methods with administrative health records, national survey data, and other secondary data sources to evaluate national health policies and conduct population-based health services research. Her current research agenda surrounds three areas: 1) provider and organization factors affecting oncology market such as vertical integration and physician network, 2) Medicare payment and value assessment for palliative care and end-of-life care in cancer, and 3) racial disparities in cancer care delivery and outcomes.
Dr. Hu has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, with work appearing in leading journals including JAMA Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Network Open, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Medical Care. She serves on the editorial board of Health Services Research and reviews manuscripts for journals including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine, and JAMA Network Open. Her research has been supported by the PhRMA Foundation, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson.
Early integration of palliative care is recommended by clinical guidelines for patients with advanced cancers, yet its utilization remains limited. This presentation will cover key stakeholders involved in palliative care within the cancer care settings, current care modalities, and structural barriers—including challenges related to the prevailing payment model. It will also introduce a framework for value assessment to support the adoption of high-value palliative care, along with highlights from ongoing work in this area.
