“Using Real World Data to Assess the Shifting Regulatory Landscape of Pharmaceutical Abortion”

Liana Woskie is an Assistant Professor in the Tufts Department of Community Heath (Medford). Liana joined Tufts from the London School of Economics (LSE) where she completed a PhD in Health Policy and Economics in 2023, focusing on the quantitative identification of human rights violations in reproductive care. She also has experience researching comparative health financing, counterfeit medicines and quality of care. Her research has been published in JAMA, the BMJ, Lancet and Feminist Economics amongst other outlets and has served as primary evidence for congressional hearings on the U.S.' disproportionate health spending as well as WHO commissions on health system performance. More recently, her doctoral project on coercive tubal ligation was awarded a Guggenheim Emerging Scholar Prize for the study of contemporary manifestations of violence against women.

Pharmaceutical abortion, generally a two-drug course of mifepristone and misoprostol, is the most common method of abortion used in the U.S. today. Historically, the study of abortion has relied heavily on data reported by patients or health care providers. However, these data may be increasingly subject to bias and underreporting due to the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade and corresponding threat of legal recourse. In this talk Dr. Woskie will review early-stage plans for her NIH Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K12 grant and corresponding projects on abortion policy. This work leverages pharmaceutical sales and other "real world" data, such as aggregated electronic health records and legal filings. The goal of this portfolio is to explore trends in pharmaceutical abortion over time and across countries, evaluating issues related to: accessibility, affordability and safety given a shifting regulatory environment.
