Health Policy Seminar
"Incorporating Productivity, Informal Caregiving Time, and Future Costs in Cost-Effectiveness Analysis"
Boshen Jiao, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical & Health Economics and a Scholar at the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics at the University of Southern California. His research develops and applies advanced methods in economic evaluation, health outcomes research, and value of information analysis to address policy-relevant questions. His current work focuses on incorporating broader social welfare considerations and uncertainty into health technology assessment to better inform value-based pricing and insurance design.
Dr. Jiao’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including three articles selected as Editor’s Choice in Value in Health. His work has been featured in various media outlets, and he has received multiple academic honors, including the ISPOR HEOR Excellence in Methodology Award and the SMDM Lee Lusted Prize. Dr. Jiao completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University and earned his PhD in Health Economics and Outcomes Research from the University of Washington.
The Second Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine recommends including productivity, informal caregiving time, and future unrelated medical costs in economic evaluations. However, these components are often omitted due to data and methodological limitations. This seminar will review the theoretical rationale for incorporating these elements, discuss their current status and potential impacts on value assessment, introduce emerging approaches to address existing challenges, and conclude with future directions for research and practice.
